Hannah Smith

Hannah Smith is Principal of the Oxford College of Garden Design, where she combines teaching, curriculum development and student mentoring with running her own residential garden design practice. 

As an OCGD graduate herself, Hannah understands first-hand the challenges of learning garden design, building confidence and establishing a successful business. Today, she helps shape the next generation of designers by combining practical industry experience with a strong focus on student development.

From Business Strategy to Garden Design

Before entering the design profession, Hannah spent more than a decade working in corporate strategy and project management for a global FMCG business, supported by a degree in Accounting & Management.

That experience continues to influence her approach to design: balancing creativity with clear thinking, commercial awareness and structured project delivery. Students often benefit as much from her understanding of professional practice as they do from her design knowledge.

Practice Meets Teaching

Alongside her role at the College, Hannah leads Hannah Smith Garden Design, creating thoughtful residential gardens from initial concept through to detailed design, visualisation and construction.

Working with live clients means the advice she shares in tutorials reflects the realities of contemporary practice - from briefing clients and presenting concepts to collaborating with contractors and delivering projects on site.

Helping Students Build Careers

Hannah believes learning doesn't end with producing a beautiful plan.

She is passionate about helping students develop the confidence to communicate ideas, present professionally and build sustainable careers in garden design.

Whether reviewing a planting plan, discussing client meetings or exploring business strategy, her aim is always the same: to help students become capable, confident designers.

Shaping the Future of OCGD

Alongside Duncan Heather and the teaching team, Hannah is leading the next chapter of the Oxford College of Garden Design.

Her work extends beyond teaching to include curriculum development, industry partnerships, alumni engagement and creating new ways for students to continue learning long after graduation through Studio Sessions, CPD and the OCGD community.
